The KA2 air-end has a concentric inlet that decreases in area, as air approaches the impeller. This annular inlet decreases air turbulence, as air passes through the aerodynamically shaped inlet guide vanes. The overhung, milled aluminum alloy impeller, variable diffuser vanes, and tear-drop shaped volute, likewise, contributes to aerodynamic flow, producing the highest efficiency. The flexible shaft design operates between the first and second lateral critical speed. Aerodynamics of the air-end are identical with all other KA air-ends, except for size.

The GK gearbox houses a single helical vertically separated speed increasing gear set, fitted with splash oil lubricated ball bearings. The gearbox is vertically split. The oil is cooled via heat dissipation through finned ribs on the blower casing. The oil reservoir (in the bottom of the gear case) holds 1.5 gallons of oil.

Efficiency
A relative comparison of the power savings of
various types of equipment, i.e., “this blower
is more efficient. It is dangerous to try and
calculate the percent efficiency of equipment, as
there are many different basis (i.e., isentropic,
polytropic, mechanical, etc.). Rather, use
actual resultant horsepowers at specific operating
conditions for comparisons of various items of
equipment.

Inlet Guide Vanes
A set of trapezoidal shaped variable vanes (IGV)
on the inlet of a centrifugal blower/compressor,
used for one of two purposes.

a. On units fitted with inlet guide vanes,
only; the IGV's throttle the inlet
(vary capacity) by opening/closing.

b. On dual vane units the IGV’s can
likewise throttle capacity, or, as on a Turblex
unit, pre-rotate the inlet air/gas, thus
changing the angle of incidence into the
impeller. This affects the unit efficiency.

Volute
The scroll-shaped blower/compressor casing,
shaped in this manner to convert velocity energy
to pressure energy as the air/gas expands in the
increasing cross sectional area.
