The KA80 air-end has a concentric inlet that decreases in area, as air approaches the impeller. This annular inlet decreases air turbulence, as air passes through the aerodynamically shaped inlet guide vanes. The milled aluminum alloy impeller (cradled between inboard and outboard bearings), variable diffuser vanes, and tear-drop shaped volute, likewise, contributes to aerodynamic flow, producing the highest efficiency. Aerodynamics of the air-end are identical with all other KA air-ends, except for size.
The GL 500 gearbox houses a double helical over/under gear set with gear teeth arranged in a herringbone configuration. The gearbox is horizontally split. Bearings are infinite life, pressure oil lubricated, bronze journal type. The fast shaft is of rigid design, operating below the first lateral critical speed. The gearbox is connected to the impeller shaft with a coupling, housed in the compressor pedestal. The oil lube system consists of mechanical and electric oil pumps, external water or air/oil cooler, and oil filter piped to the integral oil reservoir in the skid base.
